Sage (Breville outside the UK) launched the Precision Brewer in 2016 as a direct challenger to the Moccamaster's dominance in specialty filter coffee. The design brief: everything the Moccamaster does correctly, plus adjustability. The 'Thermal' variant swaps the glass hotplate carafe for a stainless-steel thermal one — the version we recommend and the one this review covers. Sage's UK service network is decent though not quite Moccamaster's level.
How it actually works
Where the Moccamaster does one thing perfectly, the Precision Brewer does six things well. The six presets: Gold Cup (SCA reference brew, 94°C, 6 min), Fast (higher flow rate, weaker cup), Strong (slower flow, denser brew), Over-Ice (brews hot onto ice), Cold Brew (12-hour ambient extraction with the reservoir), and My Brew (custom preset). The 'My Brew' lets you set brew temperature (85-98°C in 1°C increments), pre-infusion time (0-4 minutes), and flow rate. For light-roasted single-origin beans, higher temp (96-98°C) extracts more; for dark roasts, lower temp (90-92°C) avoids bitterness. The thermal carafe is the killer feature vs Moccamaster — 82°C for 4 hours means cup two at 10:30 AM tastes like cup one at 8:00 AM.

Long-term ownership notes
Two-year test unit at this desk. One issue: the thermal carafe seal degraded around month 18 (coffee cooled faster than spec), Sage replaced under warranty. Otherwise no failures, no service. Sage machines in general trend to 8-10 year lifespans in home use — shorter than Moccamaster but longer than any other filter machine in this price band. The electronics are more failure-prone than the Moccamaster's mechanical switch.
